TransformationalLeadership in Nursing
Althoughno leadership style can be used in all situations since there is nosingle style can fit in all circumstance, transformational leadershiphas been considered as the most favorable approach to the empowermentof nurses (Kelly & Tazbir, 2014). Transformational leadership iswhere followers and leaders assist each other in advancing to ahigher level of motivation. Nurse leaders having this style fit wellin the nursing setting since they are capable of identifying theadjustments that their environment requires, creating a sense ofcommitment to change, and guiding the adjustments through theinspiration of followers (Marshall, 2011). The aim of this report isto describe the strengths of a leader in nursing, leadership styles,and how the strengths and styles can be applied to professionalnursing practice.
Strengthsof the Leader in Nursing
Thereare different strengths associated with a nurse leader, which mayinclude achiever, positivity, focus, consistency, and responsibility.These strengths are discussed in the following paragraphs
Thestrength of a leader as an achiever focuses on the ability of a bossto be a critical thinker and visionary in attaining the goals set byan organization. Such an individual must be result-oriented in thedelivery of leadership. In nursing, an achiever helps in ensuringthat the set ambitions of an organization become realized.
Consistencyis the ability of a leader to apply a set of principles accordinglywithout failure. In case a leader points that he/she is going to dosomething, he/she means it because at the end of it all he/she willaccomplish it this is consistency. In nursing, it is exceedingly fora head to show this ability without failing since it helps inattaining the set goals.
Thisis the ability to pay attention to relevant issues, despite beingfaced with different competing issues, challenges, andresponsibilities. As a nurse leader, focus helps in ensuring thatthere is a consistency in offering a guided vision towards theachievement of future goals. The challenges or divergence ofresponsibilities should not waive the original objective.
Thisstrength concerns the ability of a leader to possess a positiveattitude in realizing the goals of an organization. Positivity isexceedingly vital because it helps in ensuring that the success of anorganization in different aspects is not affected by negativeelements and outcomes (Daly et al., 2003). Also, positivity aids inmaking followers productive. Therefore, it emerges as a criticalstrength to a nurse leader.
Responsibilityis the ability of a leader to be accountable for his/her actions inthe involvement of headship roles. As a nurse leader, it is importantto show responsibility for one’s actions since it helps in givingfollowers direction and motivation on what is going to be achieved.
LeadershipStyles in Nursing
Thisis a style of leadership where those in positions of headship tackledifferent circumstances with grace. Ambassadors attempt to head byscattering vicious scenarios and make them beneficial. Leaders whouse this style are considered to act in a gentle manner to persuadetheir followers to do what they expect done. Also, leaders whoutilize this nursing leadership style are respectful due to thecourtesy they show to their followers. A person who applies thisstyle can easily win followers to go in the desired direction.Because of the ability of leaders using this style to handle diversesituations, they have the capacity of heading a big number offollowers in an organization comprising of different units.Furthermore, people who have this style can become engaged inconflicts on behalf of the members they lead and not for theirpersonal gain.
Leaderswho fall under this category have the ability to take responsibilityin building teams. They are also believed to be innate mentors andusually have large networks, which can be indicated by their capacityto introduce new individuals to new ideas and new directions. Theseleaders are people who mind about the lives of workers outside ofwork, and they tend to view performance through using the lens ofpotential. Also, they are deemed to have parental as well asnurturing qualities. Because of their ability to build teams, peoplemovers are always in touch with people.
Anadvocate in leadership is considered to be a person who acts as arepresentative of a group in presenting matters. The leaders who areassociated with advocate show some special characteristics since theytend to use rationality and persuasion in handling matters. Whenarguing about a given issue, they tend to utilize both linear andnon-linear techniques. Because advocates tend to view things in blackand white only, they require ambassadors to be on their topmanagement teams to assist them to temper their communication andinfluence workers to buy into their decisions. Therefore, acombination of an advocate and ambassador makes a great grouping inan organization.
Creativebuilders are leaders who have the ability to see opportunities thatopen up for new companies and products. These individuals are usuallyhappy with the implementation of a new idea. Creative builders arealso energized by new creations, and they desire to see the new ideasgo up to the fruition stage (Dahlkemper & Anderson, 2014).Therefore, although they have an interest in creativity, theirfundamental satisfaction is the end result of a new development.Individuals such as real estate developers can be classified to fitwell in this category of leaders. Creative builders are viewed asentrepreneurs and visionaries since they are most motivated at thebeginning of things. Leaders who are creative builders can stay inone leadership position provided they have the capacity of accessingor developing new projects.
Atruth-seeker has the ability to show competency in their area withoutfailing. Leaders who are truth-seekers are characterized by thenotion of always desiring outcomes to be fair, and their capacity tomake good judgments (Casida, 2007). These leaders are critical inhelping others get an understanding of new guidelines and policies.Also, they usually level the playground for individuals who are inneed. In most cases, they become involved in situations to ensurethat justice is achieved.
Asthe name suggests, a leader who is an experienced guide has theability to offer direction to individuals who require advice. Inorder to be in a position to provide guidance to others, theseleaders have the capacity to listen to others and relate to theirneeds. Experienced guides have knowledge on different topics, whichpeople may need to enquire about therefore, in an organization,these leaders are very resourceful in giving any needed information(Hill & Howlett, 2013).
LeadershipStrengths and Styles in Professional Nursing Practice
Theleadership strengths can be related to the different styles, andapplied to a professional nursing practice. Achiever can beassociated with the ambassador and creative builder styles. This isbecause the achiever strength associates with these two styles, whichare result-oriented. Besides, it is possible to handle diversesituations using the two styles, where the strength of an achiever isfundamental. Responsibility and positivity strengths are critical inall the leadership styles since they result in the attainment of thedesired goals.
Inapplying the styles and strengths to a professional nursing practice,all the strengths would be important to the nursing setting. Thestrengths would help in ensuring that leaders achieve the anticipatedoutcomes. Alternatively, the different leadership styles will beapplied in the nursing practice under varied situations. Forinstance, when there will be a need for educating new entrants ondifferent matters, experienced guide style will be applied whiletruth-seeker will be used in times of resolving conflicts.

On the other hand, nursing leadership styles includethe experienced guide, creative-builder, truth-seeker, advocate,ambassador, and people mover. These styles can be applied in apractical nursing setting where every style would fit a givensituation.
