Throughouthuman history, communication and leadership have played a pivotalrole in ensuring the success of any organization. It is salient tofoster a positive relationship in any organization because it acts asa gold standard which is the basis of interaction. When one isappointed as a leader, it is imperative to act as a servant to thepeople you are leading by empowering g them to achieve successthrough putting the focus on the right action. In ethical leadership,it is paramount that the leader is in possession of leadershipcompetencies which will aid in building the organizationalrelationships hence fostering people to work in harmony in anorganization. This paper, therefore, seeks to give a summary of mycompetencies as an effective ethical leader. It goes further toexpound on my strengths and weaknesses following the RAM assessmentresults. The essay concludes by giving out recommendations on how Ican become a more effective leader and communicator.
Asan ethical leader, my focus is in achieving the goals of theorganization. I do not pursue my personal interests. I make genuineefforts to ensure the goals meet the needs of the organization. Thisbeing my strength, it has contributed to enhancing the team spirit ofthe organization.
Intolerancefor ethical violations
Ialways expect the employees to act in the right way at all the times.Even if when it is not convenient for them I have created awarenessto them that they should conduct themselves in the right way at alltimes. This has enabled them to act in the right way even if no oneis watching them.
Ivalue respect and therefore I listen to all members of the team. Thishas been my trait since childhood and it has played a significantrole on how I relate with other people. My compassion and generositygive my value as an ethical leader.Nevertheless,I consider theopposing viewpoints and take the time to listen to their views.
Imodel ethics and I live by example
SinceI expect the employees to lead in the right way, I lead by example bymodeling the ethics.
Thishas enabled me to avoid reproach and therefore motivating theindividuals to live according to my set example.
Itis obvious that an ethical person will always be honest andstraightforward. These are the strengths which help me as a leader. My transparency has made people have trust in my words hencefostering good relationships.
Attimes I face a challenge of consistently following g some tough ruleswhich I set in the organization. I sometimes find that I havedisparaged some individuals who do not conduct themselves accordingto the set standards.Similarly,I face a challenge when am forced tobend rules in the organization for convenience purposes. Thissometimes jeopardizes my integrity hence the employees and thosepeople under my leadership are triggered to make a wronginterpretation concerning the mission and vision of the organization.
Withholdingof help and support
Ialways believe in myself and sometimes I find it difficult to seeksupport and help from my fellow colleagues. This is a weaknessbecause sometimes it hinders me from carrying out the significantactivities in the organization because I lack the support.
Complexityof the policies
Clarityis needed when writing the policies since they should be vividlycommunicated to the targeted individuals. At some point, it becomesdifficult to document the policies in such a way that they are easyfor the employees to understand and free from the loopholes.
MYCOMPETENCIES AS AN EFFECTIVE ETHICAL LEADER
Peoplecan rely on me because am trustworthy. I keep my promises andtherefore I can be relied upon. I keep my words and therefore theemployees have trust on me.Therefore they try to live and conductthemselves according to the ethical standards.
Ialways keep the commitments and enhance loyalty with people who arenot present. My deeds match my words and I can be trusted by mycolleagues.Intergrity is crucial especially in the top management.Through social awareness I collaborate with other leaders to ensurethat I get a deeper understanding of the environment in which Icompete.
Thepassing of information is paramount when it comes to creatingawareness in any organization (Smith, 2015). However, this cannotwork if one does not possess the communication skills. As an ethicalleader, I have become competent through the possession of excellentcommunication skills. I ensure that I present my messages in theright manner for every individual to understand and get the meaningof the intended information.
Itis obvious that in an organization, employees come from diversesettings. This implies that they have different beliefs and attitudestowards various aspects. As an ethical leader, I pay attention to thevarious perceptions held by people regarding the ethical standards. Iappreciate their beliefs and try my best to ensure that each memberof the organization is comfortable with the culture of theorganization.
RECOMMENDATIONSON HOW I CAN BECOME AN EFFECTIVE LEADER AND COMMUNICATOR
Forone to be an effective leader there is a need for the individual tohave knowledge on how to communicate with all members of theorganization. To be an effective leader and communicator I will usethe following strategies:
Aneffective leader should have the ability to adapt the communicationstyle to the audience (Knobloch-Westerwick & Glynn, 2011). I willmake sure I identify my audience and their interest’s then use thecommunication style which best fits the audience. This will motivatemy audience in reacting to the information presented hence meetingthe goals of the organization.
Settingof visions and strategies
Visionis connoted as the achievement which an individual or organizationexpects to meet at the end of a specific undertaking. This will helpin identifying the areas which I need to give more consideration.Through the vision, I will be in a position of evaluating myself tofind out if I have achieved my goals. The strategies will help me inaccomplishing the set tasks.
Listenis a salient aspect of communication. As a leader, I will listen tothe views of my audience while paying attention to both the verbaland nonverbal cues.
Employeesalways look at the leaders as their role models to see how they willbehave in certain circumstances (Salawu, 2012). Therefore I willensure I lead by example through active listening so that theemployees can copy from the set example.
