Communicationis one of the biggest challenges that leaders face today, yet it isone of the critical aspects of effective leadership. Managers wholack communication skills and strategies often fail to gaincommitment and trust from employees, and may result to conflict amongemployees or between employees and management. Fora leader to build a good rapport with employees and enhance a goodrelationship among employees, and ensure that they stay engagedtowards achieving organizational goals, he or she must communicateeffectively (Hackman&amp Johnson, 2013).“Fora leader, communication is about connection and inspiration, not justpassing of information to juniors” (Burnison,2012, p2). According to Burnison, An effective leader utilizescommunication strategies not only to deliver information, but also tobuild strong relations among the employees. This ensures commitmenthence, enabling the achievement of the organizational goals.Communication strategies such as openness, consistency, listening,questioning and elaboration make a leader effective and successful.

Communicationstrategies associated with effective leadership

Jay(2012) points out that, for a leader to achieve efficiency andsuccess, he or she must create an environment that encourages opencommunication and trust among employees. Policies that encourage opencommunication make employees feel comfortable to express theiropinions in an honest manner. Employee feedback is crucial for aleader since it helps in making good decisions that are supported bymajority of the employees, contributing to success. It is alsoimportant that a leader practices honesty when communicating withemployees to build a good rapport and trust, which are essential forenhancing commitment and performance. Agood and an effective leader do not only communicate when there is aneed or crisis, but makes it a habit to keep in touch with everyonein the organization any day any time (Hackman&amp Johnson, 2013). Listeningis another communication strategy that effective leaders possess.“The most effective leaders know when to stop talking and payattention” (Jay, 2012, par4). Through listening, a leader is ableto gain important ideas from employees that can be of significanthelp in leadership.

Manyleaders need information from their employees but lack the means ofgetting it. On the other hand, employees also may have informationbut aren’t sure how to impart it.Levin (2015) argues that, questioning is a strategy of communicationthat enable leaders gather useful information and at the same timegive employees an opportunity to share ideas useful in decisionmaking. Effective leaders do not only pass information withoutelaboration. Hackman&amp Johnson (2013)argues that, it is very important that leaders communicateeffectively especially regarding changes in the routine operationswithin an organization to ensure that the employees are fullyinformed. In many organizations, change faces resistance and toensure full cooperation, it is important to win the support of theemployees by explaining to them the importance of the alterationsbeing made. Ultimately, engaging employees in effecting change canonly be achieved through proper communication from the management.

WhatWilliams needs to do differently to communicate effectively as aleader

Justas Burnison(2012) has pointed out in his argument, many leaders such as Williamslack communication strategies hence, fail to connect and inspiretheir employees. From the case scenario, it is clear that Williams asa leader, lacks communication strategies that constitute effectiveleadership. Williamsneeds to embrace technology and start utilizing communication toolssuch as emails. A good email is a simple tool that Williams can useon a daily basis to communicate with every employee in theorganization. Additionally, Williams needs to take communication as away of building good relations with his employees. Therefore, he willneed to change his way of communication and engage the employees byorganizing regular meetings. In such meetings, the leader will taketime to discuss all the issues with the employees and at the sametime give them time to ask questions.

Currently,Williams fails to communicate about new projects in time and evenwhen he does, he does not explain to the employees their importance.It is of paramount importance that information about new projects inan organization is communicated top-down and to all employees.Successfulleaders ensure that all employees are aware of any changes takingplace in their organization. This does not only enhance employeecommitment to the new projects’ goals but most importantly ensuresthat they own up the project making it a success (Hackman&amp Johnson, 2013).Last but not the least, William needs to embrace communication andmake it part of his daily operations. Despite being a leader, herequires to interact with the other employees to get feedback aboutthe four department leaders working under him. This way, Williamswill be able to connect with the employees and encourage them toshare their ideas without any fear.

Fromthe essay, it is clear that effective communication skills aresignificant aspects of an efficient leader. Communication strategiessuch as openness and listening allow a leader to gather usefulinformation from employees, which are of significant use in decisionmaking. Additionally, it is essential that a leader elaborates anyinformation passed to ensure that employees understand the importanceof any change or new projects being implemented in an organization.To conclude, it is important to point out that Williams needs toembrace the available communication technologies such as emails andSkype to ensure regular communication with his employees. It is alsoimportant that he holds regular meetings to engage his employees inproductive discussions and keep them updated on all changes takingplace in the firm. Through this, he will ensure the employees remaincommitted and are free to share ideas that can be helpful in thefirm’s success.
