Therelationship between emotional labor and employee’s servicesabotage in the hospitality industry has become an area of interestfor researchers and scholars. The article “Understanding hotelemployee’s service sabotage: Emotional labor perspective based onconservation of resources theory” documents a study that wasconducted to identify factors that motivate employees to engage inservice sabotage and measures that can be taken to correct thesituation. The article was authored by JungHoon Lee and ChihyungMichael Ok and published in the International Journal of HospitalityManagement in 2014. The authors identified that the tendency ofemployees in the hospitality sector to sabotage the service deliveryaffect the profitability and growth of the organizations. Inaddition, the authors found out that emotional intelligence canreduce service sabotage. The purpose of the analysis presented inthis paper is to determine whether the solution offered in thearticle is interdisciplinary or not. The analysis will be conductedthrough the identification of the key elements of the article,disciplines’ influence on the problem as well as the solution, anddepiction of interdisciplinary in the article. The solution presentedby Lee &amp Ok (2014) is interdisciplinary, given that it is basedon the concepts of human resources management and psychology.

Identificationof the Key Elements of the Article

Theobjective of the study was to provide answers to two major questions.First, the authors sought to identify why employees in thehospitality sector adopt service sabotage behavior. Secondly, theyintended to determine what hospitality organizations can do tomitigate the employees’ service sabotage behavior.

Thereare two major disciplines that were considered by the authors in theprocess of finding a solution. The first discipline is thepsychology, which focuses on the study of behavior as well as mentalprocesses. The second discipline is human resource management. Thediscipline focuses on the management of human capital in order tomaximize the performance of all employees.

Thereare five major concepts presented in the article. The first conceptis service sabotage, which involves the efforts applied by employeesto weaken the process of service delivery. The second concept isemotional intelligence, which refers to awareness and the ability tocontrol one’s emotion and manage interpersonal relationships.Third, emotional dissonance refers to the conflict between emotionalexpression and experienced emotions. Fourth, emotional labor refersto the management of feelings as well as their expression, with theobjective of fulfilling their requirements. Fifth, burnout refers tothe psychological stress that is characterized by the lack ofenthusiasm, exhaustion, and feelings.

Lee&amp Ok (2014) cited the theory of conservation of resources theory(COR) that is used to enhance the understanding of experience ofpsychological distress among employees. Psychology is the field oforigin of the COR theory.

Lee&amp Ok (2014) achieved the purpose of their article by conducting asurvey. They used convenience sampling to recruit 356 participants. Aquestionnaire was used as the major tool for data collection. Datawas analyzed using the Harman’s single-factor test, which allowedthem to determine the presence of a common method variance.

Thereare two major thinkers cited in the article. First, Lee &amp Ok(2014) mentioned Hobfoll, who developed the theory of COR. Hobfoll’sfield of expertise in psychology, but he focused more on issuesaffecting employees. Secondly, the authors cited Albert Bandura, whocoined the concept of self-efficacy. Bandura’s main field ofexpertise is social science.

Lee&amp Ok (2014) adopted the assumption of COR theory, which holdsthat individual employees have resources at their individuals, whomthey appreciate and they are inclined to protect.

Influenceof the Disciplines on the Problem and Solution

Thetwo disciplines (including the human resource management andpsychology) had a direct influence in the problem as well as thesolution. Lee &amp Ok (2014) integrated the discipline of psychologyby explaining the relationship between service sabotage and emotionaldissonance. This indicates the contribution of the discipline ofpsychology to show how human behavior is influenced by emotions. Inaddition, the discipline of psychology made a contribution byindicating how the change in the way employees manage their feelingsthrough emotional intelligence can provide a solution to the issue ofservice sabotage. The discipline of human resource management, on theother hand, contributed towards the problem and the solutionindicating that weaknesses in the process of managing the humancapital are some of the factors that lead to service sabotage. Thisimplies that the adoption of proper human capital managementpractices can be a viable solution. Fr example, burnout among themembers of staff could be attributed to frustration and attrition atwork (Lee &amp Ok, 2014). These factors are some the key indicatorsof poor HRM practices.

Theanalysis performed in the present study indicates that the correctdisciplines were used in relation to the problem and the solution inthe article. This is because the two disciplines used by Lee &amp Ok(2014) helped them establish the causes of the underlying problem(service sabotage) and the possible solution (use of emotionalintelligence). In addition, the discipline of HRM indicates thatburnout is a major contributor of emotional dissonance that leads toservice sabotage.

Depictionof Interdisciplinarity by the Article

Interdisciplinarityis a concept that refers to integration of the data, tools, methods,and theories from separate disciplines, with the objective ofestablishing a holistic view of a complex problem (Slavicek, 2012).The role of interdisciplinarity is to provide answers to complexquestions that cannot be addressed by theories or approaches of anindividual discipline (Wagner, Roessner, Klein, Bobb, Keyton, Boyack,Rafols &amp Borner, 2011). The establishment of an integrativesynthesis that is greater or different from the sum of separateapproaches is one of the key characteristics of interdisciplinarity.For example, Chu, Baker &amp Murrmann (2012) applied a combinationof psychological and HRM concepts to explain that acting and trainingtechniques can address the issue of emotional dissonance. Similarly,Shani, Uriely, Ginsburg &amp Reichel (2014) used interdisciplinaryperspectives to find a solution to the issue of surface acting amongmembers of staff in the hospitality sector. Therefore,interdisciplinarity is different from other concepts, such asmultidisciplinary, that allow the retention of disciplines to retaintheir respective original identities.

TheApproach Used in the Article

Lee&amp Ok (2014) used an interdisciplinary approach to assess theproblem of service sabotage and its solution. The level ofinterdisciplinarity is confirmed by use of HRM and psychologicalconcepts to explain the occurrence of the underlying problem ofservice sabotage. For example, the combination of emotionaldissonance (a psychological concept) and frustration at work (a HRMconcept) motivate employees to sabotage services since they feeldissatisfied.

Areview of the sources used by Lee &amp Ok (2014) indicates that theauthors used references from different disciplines. Some of thedisciplines that be easily identified from the list of referencesinclude social psychology, criminology, and hospitality. Thisconfirms that the authors were able to pull from multipledisciplines. In addition, Lee &amp Ok (2014) used evidence fromdifferent perspectives and thinkers from various fields. For example,the authors used the views put forward by Albert Bandura, Hobfoll,among others.

Froma personal knowledge, it is evident that Lee &amp Ok (2014) used amultidisciplinary approach to identify a solution for the issue ofservice sabotage in the field of hospitality. This allowed theauthors to explain how the application of effective HRM practices canimpact the psychology of employees in a positive way, thus reducingtheir tendency to sabotage the process of service delivery. Therefore, a combination of knowledge and approaches from differentdisciplines resulted in a common and an effective solution.

However, themethodology allowed Slavicek to consider the perspectives of otherscholars. The article is a useful resource used to explain thespecific applications of the concept of interdisciplinary.
