The health workers areexpected to meet several demands that guarantee the citizens ahealthy status. The workforce experiences various forms of challengesas they attempt to deliver excellent services in the medical centers.However, the issues have to be addressed to ensure the quality ofhealthcare remains high. The paper presents an impact report tosenior leadership that begins by illustrating a nursing challenge inone of the medical facilities. It analyzes the effect of the problemon the organization’s operations. It shall also assess how a newnurse leader position may have power and influence to affect theoutcomes of patients’ as well as the firm’s power structure anddynamics.

The NursingChallenge

The issue identified at one of the nursing homes in the East Coast isthe shortage of nursing staff. The healthcare facility is lackingadequate employees to serve the patients at the center resulting in abad quality of services (Watermark, 2016). One of the effects withinthe nursing profession is insufficient staff which lead to workplacestress. The current workers tend to have too much work that they areexpected to perform that leaves them exhausted within a short period.Besides, they are required to multitask, which might be a burden ifone is not entirely trained for the position. For instance, a nursemay be needed to administer medication to patients and another totime serve at the customer care desk. Therefore, when they are atthe reception, one may lack the necessary skills and knowledge on howto treat visitors which results in a poor public image of theorganization. The increased workload among nurses translates to ahigh rate of staff turnover affecting the entire performance of thenursing home (Watermark, 2016). Another effect of having feweremployees in a medical facility is that it adversely affects thepatient care. When nurses are understaffed, it implies that some oftheir duties may be neglected or be delayed which could interferewith the recovery of the patients. The clients also developdissatisfactory on the manner in which they are attended to makingsome of them to transfer to other facilities and build a badreputation of the organization. Hence, nursing staff shortages withinhealth centers are not recommended because of the workload stressthat the workers develop, and the high rate of staff turnover maymake it difficult for the organization to replace and retain itsemployees.

The nursing challenge of having inadequate employees createscommunication gap and lack of cooperation in the nursing homestatement and practice. The systems theory argues that a completeprocess consists of various elements that connect or interact to makea procedure complete (Dekkers, 2015). The nursing home exists in anenvironment that depends on approaches such as communication andcooperation among the employees that enables the facility to procureits practice successfully. However, when the workers are notsufficient, a gap arises where the staff cannot communicate due tothe high-stress levels. They become temperamental and develop an egothat leads to lack of cooperation. The challenge also creates aconflict between the company’s statement and practices where itargues it provides extraordinary services that result in fasterrecovery for their patients. The systems thinking model suggests thatby understanding the various elements in a process, an organizationis capable of making better decisions (Stroh, 2015). A nursing homethat does not have enough employees implies that it does not havesufficient resources to deliver the required output. Therefore thequality of its patient care shall be weak.

The organization is a nursing home that provides skilled nursingservices to independent and assisted living patients, memory carecommunities as well as rehabilitation services. The facility asadopted the bureaucratic system as its organizational structure toallow division and specialization of labor within the firm. The teamis headed by the chairperson, the President, Managing Directors,Chief Financial Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, and administratorsof respective departments. The purpose of the organization is toimprove the quality of life of their clients while its vision is acommitment to creating unique communities where individuals thrive.The firm’s philosophical statement is to support the physicalhealth, emotional and spiritual well-being because the transformativedevelopments change the daily lives of the residents (Watermark,2016).

The organizational factors that may cause short staffing include theincreased technological changes. The number of qualified ITprofessionals in the market is inadequate to satisfy the demand forthe workers in the country which contributes to the staff shortage.Another element is the increased and growing competition amongnursing and rehabilitation centers. Most of the health carefacilities are renting or developing luxurious homes into nursinghomes that enable them to attract more clients. The increase in laborcosts also contributes to the shortage of workers because it isexpensive for the nursing home to acquire adequate skilledprofessionals to work within the facility. Despite the identifiedissues, one of the factors that may provide a solution to the nursingchallenge is the monetary assistance that the nursing home obtains.The facility can budget on its income to ensure it has adequate fundsto acquire the required labor to operate the organization. Anotheropportunity for improvement is by developing and implementing uniqueoperation strategies that shall minimize competition and help instaff retention because most employees prefer being associated withfirms that are leading in the market.

The Position

The new nurse leadership position shall contribute to the changewithin the organization in various ways. The leader shall have thepower to make informed decisions on behalf of the firm. The seniorposition also enables the new nurse to supervise the work of othernurses to ensure they abide by the policies of the facility andremain committed to achieving the set goals of the organization. Theroutine supervision ensures the patient’s needs are met andsatisfied beyond their expectation. The position shall allow thenurse leader to address any issues raised by the clients within ashort period thus boosting the patient outcome. Based on theleadership theory, the most suitable style of management for nursesis Management by walking around (MBWA) as it allows them to observetheir staff, evaluate the quality of care being delivered, and showone’s interests in their operations (Lussier &amp Achua, 2015).The appropriate leadership skills for the position include excellentcommunication and listening skills, motivator, team player, rolemodel, decision-maker, highly imaginative, and possess integrityskills.
