HowMedia Affects Society in a Positive Way
The advancement of technology has enabled the media industry toexperience significant growth over the past few years. The primarypurpose of the press has always been to communicate factual contentto the human race. It provides information to the public throughvarious platforms such as the radio, newspaper, and television. Alarge population relies on the press to be informed since the numberof viewers and listeners of TV and radio stations is quite high.Hence, it can be assumed that the media influences the societyalthough the adverse effects tend to surpass the positive ones. Thepaper seeks to explain how the media has changed today’s society ina positive manner by analyzing the effect it has on children, thebusiness world, and the public.
Parents send their children to schools to get an education, but thelessons do not end when they leave the institutions. They continuelearning even when they get at home through the media. According toSpurr, et al., (18), teenagers are spending most of their timeindoors watching programs on television. Some of the adverts andshows being aired in the press tend to be educative. For example, astation may present a quiz show that ends up being popular amongfriends and other students in school. The children are more likely todevelop an interest in the quiz show and even be willing toparticipate because of its educative effect on them. Despite gainingpopularity within the community for engaging in such shows, thepupils get to boost their level of literacy and increase theirperformance in school. The media also affects the children byenhancing socialization (Spurr, et al. 32). When kids watchtheir favorite programs at home, they discuss the events of the showthe next time they meet up with their friends. At times, the childrenend up predicting how the programs may end which helps in fosteringgood relations since they have something to look forward to in theirnext meeting. The media is also educative to the teenagers because itteaches them different life lessons. Some of the programs might onlyappear entertaining to the children, but they tend to have certainmessages that they are passing to the young generation. Hence thereason, some of the programs warn the viewers about the need forparental guidance since the adults can help the children in decodingthe message being passed. Therefore, the media affects the society bybeing educative to the young community.
The world consists of people who are from various backgrounds. Thedifferences arise in their cultural practices, attitudes, andreligious beliefs that are likely to affect how they interactparticularly when disagreements arise. In some circumstances, whenindividuals have contrasting opinions and fail to reach a commonground, they end up engaging in conflict (Iftikhar, et al. 43).For instance, during political campaigns among different communities,political differences may arise among the various tribes if thekinsmen realize that unfair practices were applied. However, themedia has proved to have a strong influence on the society on suchmatters. The press has realized that when the political temperaturesare high, individuals tend to seek more information about suchsituations through the television, radio and over the internet. Themedia can positively affect the public opinion by making the diversepopulation develop a collective attitude towards the matter and evenestablish cooperation among the various groups (Iftikhar, et al.55). One of the ways achieves the unity is by inviting thepolitical leaders from the various groups for press interviews anddebates. The public is asked to participate in the discussion bysending texts on issues that they want the leaders to address. Thepoliticians thus get to erase any differences and portray a positiveimage to the public that helps in facilitating togetherness among thepublic. Another way the media can influence the public opinion isthrough providing reporting on surveys conducted on social issues.For instance, during elections, a research organization can presentthe findings of a study regarding the leader with highest level ofpublic support. The results of such studies may affect others tochange their decisions.
The media has always been a primary stakeholder in the marketing ofproducts. Companies used to invest in print adverts, radio and TVcommercials as their marketing mediums, but with the technologicalevolution, the traditional marketing channels have become obsolete(Mueller & Wolny 564). There is increased use of the internetparticularly in social media platforms whereby large populationsspend time. Some of the social sites include Facebook, Twitter,LinkedIn, and Instagram. Most businesses have embraced the use ofsocial media to market their products to potential customers andestablish online shops where buyers can conveniently purchase variouscommodities. The media is said to have positively affected thesociety by enabling businesses to create awareness about theirproducts by providing them with a marketing channel that isefficient. The Internet allows entrepreneurs to reach a vast marketshare and directly interact with them. The feedback enables companiesto implement changes that facilitate increased sales of theircommodities (Mueller & Wolny 575). Internet marketing has alsoproved to be significant because it is quite cheap and puts norestriction on when an advert can be viewed. Unlike in thetraditional marketing media, where organizations had to pay for theiradverts to be aired and experience time limits on when the publiccould see them and the press management determine the frequency ofthe commercials. Therefore, it is evident that the media has alwaysbeen of significant assistance to the operations of businesses. Theadvanced technology has only facilitated decisive influence of thepress to enterprises.
Communication is considered an essential element in the world. Itenables the exchange of information among parties. However, therehave been barriers that limit communication among people such as themedium and the distance. The media has been able to overcome suchcommunication obstacles by providing social networks that allowpeople across the world to interact. Individuals also get tocommunicate their thoughts and share ideas on different topics fromthe comfort of their homes (Wilkinson, et al. 839). Some ofthe platforms have opened opportunities for writers and bloggers toshare information with the rest of the world. The blogs allow readersto comment and provide their opinions on various matters. Therefore,the media has positively affected the society by providing thefreedom to give input and exchange ideas on different subjects. Themedia has also facilitated communication among family and friends byallowing people who live in different geographical areas to maintaincontact through the social networks. It has been able to outdo theslow channels of interaction that involved sending letters throughpost or physically sending a person. The media has enabled fast andreliable means that allows people to deliver personal messagesdirectly without them being distorted and getting immediate feedback.Communication among businesses has also been enhanced and has alsoenabled most of the local organizations to develop internationalrelations with foreign firms (Wilkinson, et al. 845). Thepartnership has been facilitated by the efficient communicationsystems that support video conferencing, which allows meetings to beconducted across the world at the same time. The improvedcommunication system through the social media has greatly improvedthe industrial society relations across many countries in the world.
Human life is affected by factors such as one’s level of income,health, and lifestyle among other elements. When issues arise in thesociety such as famine, disease outbreak, war, and conflicts, themedia always provide the fastest means of transmitting theinformation. Although the press may only report the incidencesthrough the news, their messages touches different people who use thesame platform to address the problems highlighted. For instance,obesity and overweight are among the factors contributing toincreased mortality rates in developed countries. A large populationin the world is also suffering from treatable illnesses such asdiarrhea and malaria, in arid areas people are dying from famine,while in other regions death is being caused by ethnic wars (Young,et al. 103). Organizations and individuals are rising andjoining hands to address the various social issues that they learnabout through the media. They are also using the press to createpublic awareness on the preventive measures and the significance ofbehavior changes. The government also gets to work with privategroups in support of making a positive shift in the society andpromoting unity in the world by sponsoring the sensitization programsthat are aired on the television, radio, and magazines (Young, etal.112). Individuals also use the social media to spread thepowerful messages by sharing actual texts on various networking sitessuch as Facebook and Twitter. Campaigns and adverts that are aimed ateducating the public on the problems facing the human fraternity arealso being conducted through the media. The programs containimportant messages from the victims that urge the people to implementthe precautionary measures. Alternatively, the campaigns could beseeking assistance from the viewers and listeners to givehumanitarian aid to victims of attacks such as earthquakes, andfloods who are left homeless. In many circumstances, when individualsare asked to help through the media, they tend to come out in largenumbers and even provide messages of hope through Facebook andTwitter to the affected lives. Social media helps in educating thepublic on the social issues and facilitate behavior change evenfaster.
In summary, the press has indeed affected the society positively. Oneof the ways the media has impacted the world is by educating theyoung generation. The content available in the press is said to beinformative and has even helped in enhancing social relations amongthe children. When the kids meet in school, they get to discuss whatthey watch and listen, which helps in maintaining friendship.Secondly, the press has influenced the community by shaping thepublic opinion of people. It has been more efficient in politicalsituations by helping to remove any differences that arise amongpeople of various backgrounds. It has also assisted in determiningthe direction an election of a country or influential groups maytake. Thirdly, the media has enhanced marketing where businesses havea cheaper and more efficient channel through the social mediaplatform. Companies can engage in effective marketing that enablesthem to interact with customers and increase their market share too.Fourthly, the society has been positively impacted by the media byenhancing communication. People maintain contact through social mediasites and even develop business relations with internationalorganizations, thus, promoting economic growth. Finally, the mediahas been able to facilitate positive change and promote unity in thecommunity. The modifications are achieved through informing the worldof the social issues and providing them with preventive strategies aswell as mechanisms on how to improve their behavior. Therefore, themedia serves as a crucial element in improving the human lives withinthe society.
