Thestory, “What we talk about when we talk about love”, is aninteresting and engaging piece that commits its readers to thoroughsoul searching. It communicates the real issues about love and thevaried perceptions regarding love matters. Most importantly, it issignificant to mention that the story adopts the language of dialogueto relate its themes. Dialogue is developed in this story sodistinctively, and I will rely on its providence to create my paper.In the article, I undertake to create a discussion on how the storyin its application of dialogue promotes the understanding of thedialogue concept and how it should be written.

Itis worth noting that a dialogue could have passive and activeparticipants. This is to say that as passive communicators, thepeople involved do not speak much but are of significance to thediscourse because they form part of the primary audience, whereasactive speakers could be the leader of a group or the person raisingissues that are discussed in any given dialogue. The passiveparticipants usually use more non-verbal cues to communicate theirthoughts either in approval or disproof (Weinman, 2012).

Itis imperative to assert that a dialogue must exhibit certain salientfeatures to ensure that it is correctly written and structured. It isfor sure that a discussion must involve two or more persons, talkingto send a message over a given issue. Also, dialogues must display agoal. It must show what the discourse has to achieve.

Dialogueignites controversy in an argument as participants express divergentviews concerning the issue talked about. Dialogue allows theparticipants to relate their ideas without influence from externalsources. The communicators in a dialogue enter the conversationwithout the knowledge of the course it is to take. The tone in whicha person speaks affects the manner of response from the other party.In dialogue, all participants are given the chance to speak theirmind without the fear of turning controversial. When the participantsremain tolerant to one another’s opinions, then it confirms eachother and explains that the expressions of individuals are real. Thecommunicators inter-depend, each constructing self and the talksimultaneously.

Dialoguereveals the character and personality of the parties engaging in it.When people engage in conversations, their personality and characterare developed. It is determined by their mood and tone as they speak.The utterances of one party in a discourse inform the language of therespondent. The conversation will only last as long as the charactersseem to be agreeing in the tone they speak. For instance, if a givenparty shouts at the other, the result is that the responding partymay choose to withdraw from the dialogue or frustrate theconversation through employing a similar tone. In the development ofcharacter the writer is sure not to include insulting sentiments,otherwise, the readers will express a critical rage at such a piece.

Dialogueshows purpose. The conversation must take into consideration therelations the characters have had in the past and determine whatmanner of future they would still share. The conversations of friendsare different from that witnessed in strangers talk. The participantsendeavor to create a discourse that will construct meaning on theissues that they discuss. It is important to understand the solepurpose of dialogue as passing the message carried from one source tothe next.

Again,dialogue shows genuineness and authenticity. It captures the freewill that participants possess to share their opinions with oneanother as realities. The speakers in a conversation have the freedomof divulging their experiences of the world (Cissna &amp Anderson,2012). Dialogue affords the participants a platform to address theiractual feelings. The participants are assumed to speak and act inways that resonate to their worlds of experience.

Also,dialogues should be unexpected. The discourses in the story shouldleave the readers expecting more from the speakers. A reader shouldbe subject to the suspense created by the writer. In essence,developing the story with its uniqueness. The speech of thecharacters should elaborate the unpredictability of their words(Cissna &amp Anderson, 2012). The reader should not be able toforesee the mind of the next speaker because it creates a wearisomesituation.

Itsuffices to mention that dialogue exhibits vulnerability. It is theunderstanding that parties are subject to change. Ultimately, theconversation might modify the opinion of one of the participants, andthat is the substance of discourses. Dialogues are meant to persuademembers into adopting new ideas and views. It only makes us variableindividuals (Cissna &amp Anderson, 2012). The meaning of dialoguepermits us to stay our ground but not defend it at all costs becauseone would miss the chance to review an obsolete perspective.

Also,a dialogue should not be weighed down by exposition. The story shoulddepict this feature of the conversation in a more transparent manner.The writer should be sensitive not to overindulge his characters inthe production of unnecessary and provocative words that will denythe story worthy content. The talk should contain the speeches thatconstruct the pertinent themes of the story. Exposition would only beof significance when the characters are strangers to each other, andit is requisite that they explain themselves. In a situation wherethe characters are friends and confidants, the writer should limitthe amount of exposition because it is assumed that they already knoweach other and have no need of thorough identification (Cissna &ampAnderson, 2012).

Agenuine dialogue should also apply dialogue tags, gestures, andactions to keep the attention of the reader on the story. In a story,a dialogue will only be known with the use of dialogue tags. Thesetags make known the source of a message and recipient. Gesturesshould also be actively utilized in the conversations. The writersshould exercise actions in composing dialogues and to create meaningin the words spoken by the communicators. The tags assist the readersin keeping track of the conversations (Weinman, 2012).

Inconclusion, the assessment discloses the relevant aspects ofdialogue. Dialogue should be applied to address important themes in astory. It should be regarded as a critical facet of a story thatneeds well preparation to present a piece that captures the undividedattention of readers. Dialogue should give a clear picture andexemplify the purpose for its use.
