Oneof the advantages is that situational leadership can lead to anincrease in employee performance. This is based on the argument thatit is feasible to identify at what stage workers are and utilize theappropriate style in motivating them to perform. Also, another meritof this approach is that it helps in facilitating leader awareness(Northouse, 2010). Leaders who create empathy towards their workerswill be more aware of what their employees need making them performas effective leaders. Furthermore, another benefit of this techniqueis that it is possible for a leader to use different styles dependingon the situation, which implies that one is comfortable dealing withfollowers (Northouse, 2010).
Despitethe advantages, this approach also has some disadvantages. One of thedemerits of this style is that it may bring about confusion(Northouse, 2010). In case situational leadership is not appliedwell, it may spike confusion amid employees since they may not knowwhat to expect, which may develop an environment of fear andinsecurity. Another demerit is that this approach may make employeesperceive that there is manipulation or coercion. Since the leader maydesire to employ different styles depending on the circumstance, theapproach may be deemed to control employees moves that may make themsee the technique as being manipulative.
Itis a good idea to change leadership approaches because it helpsleaders in using a technique that fits a given situation. This isimportant because it is not possible to have one approach that isapplicable to all the situations.
